Apprenticeships vital for Qld’s COVID recovery
July 15, 2021
GLADSTONE Ports Corporation (GPC) is on the hunt for the region’s next generation of tradespeople to jump onboard its prestigious Apprentice Program, with applications now open for the 2022 intake.
The highly sought-after program offers a variety of disciplines, including electrical, diesel fitting, plumbing, mechanical and horticulture to a diverse range of people.
Chief Operating Officer Craig Walker said GPC was focused on building a strong workforce for the next 50-years and a skilled workforce was vital to Queensland’s COVID recovery.
“One in four jobs in the region rely on trade and we are committed to providing outstanding employment outcomes for our apprentices and trainees through our competitive working arrangements, which deliver benefits to our employees, our organisation and to the region for the future,” Mr Walker said.
“At GPC we aim to support them to develop world-class skills and expand their horizons, both with us and within the region,”
“We have a rich history of apprentices representing Australia through the World Skills program”.
Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water and Member for Gladstone, Glenn Butcher said a skilled workforce was vital to Queensland’s COVID recovery.
“Gladstone Ports Corporation’s invaluable apprenticeships are helping build our regional workforce,” Mr Butcher said.
“As a proud mechanical fitter and turner who did my apprenticeship with the Gladstone Power Station, I know how important it is to get a pathway to meaningful employment.”
“Our apprentices and trainees will play a valuable role in this economic recovery and the Gladstone Port is a great place to get this on-the-job training,” he said.
Each year GPC employs a number of new apprentices who demonstrate the ability to work safely in an industrial environment, have the motivation to learn and develop new skills and work constructively within a team.
The apprentices and trainees will undertake a structured learning program, which includes a variety of training initiatives to enhance their skills and knowledge, improving their future and the future of the local community.
Applications close on 23 July at 4:30pm.
