New Era for Auckland Hill – Scenic Gem Reimagined

August 14, 2025

Gladstone’s scenic gem, the highly anticipated multi-million dollar attraction Auckland Hill Lookout is now fully open to the community after receiving the Stage 2 nod of approval today from the Australian and Queensland Governments, represented by the Hon Anthony Chisholm and Hon Rosslyn Bates.

Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) spectacular Auckland Hill vantage point, overlooking Gladstone Harbour, includes five contemporary viewing platforms, café, playground, car parks, walkways, improved accessibility (inc. ramps and handrails), and ample places to sit and soak up the views. Outdoor entertaining spaces are well equipped with electric barbeques and water bubblers for community use.

The community can also access the lookout from three entry points from the stairway connecting to GPC’s award-winning East Shores Parkland.

The revitalisation of Auckland Hill is a result of a strong partnership between the Australian and Queensland Governments. The GPC Auckland Hill Harbour Outlook Project received $5 million in funding from the Australian Government under the Regional Recovery Partnerships program, and a further $6.565 million provided by the Queensland Government.

The Hon Anthony Chisholm Assistant Federal Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland said, “we are proud to have collaborated on this project to redevelop this iconic Gladstone tourist attraction, reinforcing our commitment to supporting the region’s tourism industry.

“The transformed Auckland Hill Lookout improves the visitor experience, while also improving accessibility to ensure more people can enjoy this beautiful community attraction.

“This redevelopment is a testament of Federal and State Governments committed to making region-shaping projects like this a reality.”

Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates said the Crisafulli Government is pleased to see businesses benefit and tourism boosted from this project.

“The Crisafulli Government is a government which will make investments in a stronger, more productive economy, which will build a better lifestyle for Queenslanders,” Minister Bates said.

“Stage 2 of the Auckland Hill Harbour Outlook Project is a win for Gladstone which will deliver a boost in tourism, improved liveability, and more local jobs.

“Auckland Hill is now a space that reflects the pride and potential of Gladstone, a community that deserves to be front and centre in Queensland’s future – and is an example of what we are delivering across regional Queensland.”

GPC Acting Chief Executive Officer Jenelle Druce said, “the view from Auckland Hill showcases the importance of the Port of Gladstone, the pivotal role GPC plays in our community, and how inter-connected visitors are to one of Australia’s most significant port assets.”

“Auckland Hill Lookout is now part of the suite of GPC’s world-class community parklands, including East Shores, the Marina and Spinnaker Park – continuing our contribution to a thriving community that highlights the best of what Gladstone has to offer.

“Thanks to the support of the Australian and Queensland Governments, this redeveloped lookout has been transformed to attract more visitors to the region and further build pride in our community, while acknowledging our deep cultural connection with local First Nations People.

“I’m proud to be here today alongside our government project partners to officially open this iconic location which will pave the way for future opportunities in our region and add to GPC’s astounding legacy – we are more than just a port.”
