Regional students offered chance to shine

GLADSTONE Ports Corporation (GPC) is giving local talent a chance to shine, with applications now open for the Talent Today, Talent Tomorrow program.
GPC’s program is in its 8th year and is designed to support the learning journey of regional students by providing financial assistance of up to $21,000 over a three-year period.
Indigenous Affairs Advisor Lee-Ann Dudley said GPC has supported handfuls of students over the years since the program launched in 2013.
“It’s a rewarding program not just for students who receive the bursary but for parents and guardians who commit their time to their child’s education,” Ms Dudley said.
“Creating brighter futures for our Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islanders is key to our Reconciliation Plan,” she said.
Ms Dudley said the past applicants have created an inspiring pathway for those considering the scholarship.
“Former applicants include Harrison Smith who is now in his third year of completing a double degree of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Tasmania,”
“Krysta Alexander is a local student who is expected to graduate from CQ University in 2022 with a teaching degree.”
Chief Operating Officer Craig Walker said the impact of the program was priceless to the community.
“This program is really empowering for our community,” Mr Walker said.
“It not only encourages students to chase their dreams but it gives the financial support to work part-time,” he said.
“GPC has provided more than $91,000 in financial assistance to Gladstone and Bundaberg students through the bursary and recognition program since it started in 2013.”
GPC acknowledges and values the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander heritage, culture and people, and the role they play in our organisation as employees, customers and community members.
Applications open on 23 August to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander students.
A one-off payment of $500 for the junior student and $750 for the senior student will be paid to each of the successful candidates’ schools, to be held in trust for the student.
